Vintage Bedouin Niqabs Ceremonial Face Veil Woman Mask Hand Made Woven Silver.
These vintage/antique Niqabs face veils were worn by women for practical reasons like keeping the sun and sand out of their eyes, as well as for ceremonial, religious and wedding celebrations. The material looks like fine cotton or wool with finely hand embroidered colorful designs in zig-zag and other geometric designs. It is adorned with attached silver ornaments and accents that may have been older than the mask and taken from other ceremonial pieces. It is completely hand sewn with two eye-shaped holes for the eyes. The workmanship is beautiful and was probably made for a ceremonial occasion as it is too heavy to be worn as a practical face mask.
This item was purchase at an estate sale from the grandson of the man that had brought it home in the 1970's from one of his trips to the Middle East but they did not know what country. No one else in the family knew anything else about it or a variety of items he had brought back from his foreign travels. The veil could be much older. I have found a few on line that are similar in design and construction and one in a museum. It measures 8" x 10" with a silver braid around three sides and two 12" black straps for tying. It is a very beautiful and unique find and holds a lot of interesting energy.
