Description

AMERICAN HERITAGE PLATTER
CONSTITUTION AND JAVA
19 December 1812
Wedgwood England
This magnificent Wedgwood platter has never been used. It has remained in the box for many years. We have another one, which we do use. It measures 18 3/4" by 15 1/2" (47.63cm by 39.37cm).
The story of this battle between the two frigates is well-told in the accompanying pamphlet and summarized on the back of the platter:
The Americans had built a larger frigate, US Constitution, carrying 24 pound guns versus 18 pound guns on the British ship, HMS Java. This enabled Constitution to lay off and dismast Java while outside the range of her guns. The platter depicts the result of that engagement.
The platter is without blemish or chip. It will be shipped in its original box, including the flyer and the pamphlet.
Please see photos for condition.
