    Description

Kalash woman's headdress from the village of Bumburet Valley, North Pakistan.  Wool - hand embroidered.  Decorated with cowrie shells, bells, buttons & beads.  Dimensions: 28" x 5".
The Kalash are a Dardic Indo-Aryan indigenous people living in 3 villages in the Chitral District of north Pakistan near the Afghan border.  The women dress in colorful clothing and do not cover their faces.  The Kalash speak their own language and follow their own religion.  They are not Mislums and have, over the the years been persecuted by the Taliban, Pakistanis, and Afghans.    I purchased this headdress in the  Bumburet Valley in 1996.  As a woman traveling alone this was a very difficult part of the world to travel in.
