    The Petty Girl
    Esquire September 1936 Fadeaway
George Petty schooled in art at the Academic Julian in Paris, returned to Chicago to work briefly with an engraving company and an advertising agency. He soon opened his own studio, and with hard work and creative talent he built a solid business and a reputation as a fine illustrator. The launching of Esquire magazine in 1933 provided a national showcase for his Petty Girls and assured his successful career as a commercial artist .
This painting is as a "fadeaway," a technique made popular by Coles Phillips (one of Petty's favorite illustrators of the 1920s) in which all or a portion of the figure's clothing blends into the background. Pett's striking illustration, with blackout background and the flaming red-haired lady modestly covering herself, is simplicity personified.
