Description

This elegant Wedgwood solid blue jasperware cheese dish is sprigged with five classical anecdotes in versions scultped by William Hackwood, Josiah Wedgwood I's highly skilled longtime modeler (1769-1832). These include "Muses Watering Pegasus," "Group with Cage," "Aesculapius Teaching Youth," "Cupid Asleep," and "Icarus and Daedalus." These scenes are separated by anthemion dividers. The shoulder of the dome and the base plate are wreathed with Wedgwood's stylized laurel borders. A rosette of acanthus leaves surmounts the finial.
This small blue modern cheese dish stands 6” high overall. The dome measures about 4-3/4” high plus a 3/4” tall finial and is 7” in diameter. The base is 9-5/8” in diameter and 3/4” high. Impressed “WEDGWOOD® MADE IN ENGLAND”, and the initials “KD” on the base and “JH” on the dome (workers' initials).  Minimal staining on bottom of base is otherwise invisible. Condition is excellent, with no chips, cracks, scratches, or repairs.
