Winston Churchill Royal Mint of Britain Sterling Silver Medallion Proof Set

In 1974 the Royal Mint of Britain and American Express issued a collection of 24 Sterling Silver Medallions to commemorate Winston Churchill. There were 3 intervals (sets) issued: “The Early Years”, “The Years of Preparation” and “Wilderness to Power”. This item was purchased by my father brand new at the time of it was released in 1974.
This sale is for the second set, “The Years of Preparation”. It was issued in a faux leather case and in addition to 8 Sterling Silver Medallions, includes a 17 page booklet written by Martin Gilbert, Churchill’s biographer. Each Sterling Silver Medallion measures 45 millimeters, weighs 1.3875 Troy Ounces (720 grains, approximately 12 Troy ounces total) and each is enclosed in a clear plexiglass holder where they have been since 1974.
The case is in excellent overall condition and has no splits, markings or blemishes. The entire set weighs 4 lbs., 6 oz.
